Brian Bassett from the Jets Blog (TJB) just posted a blog post with new information from a source close to the Leon Washington Camp stating that the Jets have put out false information regarding the running backs contract offers:
According to a source close to Leon Washington that talked exclusively to TheJetsBlog.com, it’s time to clear out some of the tangled web the Jets front office has tried to weave during the Leon Washington contract standoff. Webs that apparently began as early as last summer with a tone-setting August Daily News report that the Jets had “a $5million-a-year offer on the table, [with] $10 million in guarantees” waiting for the Jets running back to sign.
No contract even close to those figures was offered by the team to Leon Washington’s camp.
Instead, the source contends that “”the Jets … offered $2.4 million. Leon is worth way more than that.” In addition to the $2.4 million offer by the Jets there was no bonus or guarantees that kicked in until at least next year.
This is becoming a story of he said / she said. If the source in fact is legit, and I know Brian well, this person shines some light on some crazy exaggerations by the Jets and what they reported they offered the running back. I guess I’m wondering why this is only coming out now. We knew about the Jets offers for a while, so why didn’t Leon’s agent, Alvin Keels, or the player himself go on record disputing the reported contract number. Why are they doing this through an anonymous source?
By staying quiet like this, it makes Leon look like he is a greedy player who doesn’t care about his public perception of him. Just read Basset’s post and see the comments about his agent. People cannot stand Alvin Keels, right or wrong.
Brian stated that he had reached out to the Jets for official comment, so we wait as everyone if they will respond.
The quotes that really stuck out to me:
- “Trust me, if the Jets would have offered him the [reportedly leaked $5.0 million offer] he would have been signed,” the source stated. “But they didn’t.”
- The source also said that at least two other teams are “interested” in Washington.
- “The Jets released [the false contract] to get fans against him in case he goes to another team and does well,” said the source.
So what do you think? Is this legit?

I stumpled upon a press release from Brand Keys, a research consultancy that specializes in customer-loyalty-and-engagement metrics that announced that Major League Baseball has tied the NFL with the “Most Loyal Fans” in their Annual Brand Key Sports Loyalty Index. You can see the 2010 index on their site, but I am unable to find all the details. After some digging and finding a list on Bizofbaseball.com, guess where the Jets showed up:
National Football League:
1. Indianapolis Colts
2. New England Patriots
3. Pittsburgh Steelers
4. Tennessee Titans
5. New York Jets
According to the Press Release:
After years in the #2 spot, Major League Baseball is now tied with the National Football League with the “most loyal fans,” according to the 15th annual 2010 Brand Keys Sports Loyalty Index, a survey which helps professional sports teams increase broadcast, ticket and merchandise revenues by providing loyalty rankings and fan diagnostics in their home and national markets.
2010 League Rankings
1. NFL/MLB
2. NBA
3. NHL
“The Sports Loyalty Engagement Index gives an apples-to-apples comparison of the intensity with which fans support professional sport leagues and their home team vs. the corresponding values for the fans of other teams in the market,” said Robert Passikoff, president of New York- based Brand Keys, Inc.
“These insights allow leagues and teams to identify areas that need strategic reinforcement. Done correctly, an increase in broadcast viewership, merchandise purchase, and ticket revenue will follow, and happier fans. Everybody loves a winner, but it’s important to note that win/loss ratios do not entirely govern fan loyalty,” noted Brand Keys’ Passikoff.
Fan loyalty is driven in four ways:
- Pure Entertainment
How well a team does, but more importantly, how exciting is their play?
- Authenticity
How well they play as a team. New stadiums can help on this driver. Oftentimes, so can a new Manager.
- Fan Bonding
Are players respected and admired?
- History and Tradition
Is the game and the team part of a fan’s and a community’s rituals, institutions and beliefs?
So if you take four pillars that a brand gets rated on, I can see why the Jets ranked fairly high. The Jets are PURE Entertainment now that they have Rex Ryan. Also with the announcement of appearing on HBO’s “Hard Knocks”, this is the peak of the mountain for this catergory!
For the rating of Authenticity, the Jets played really well and ranked high because of making it to the AFC Championship game.
Under Fan Bonding, they say that the Jets fans have to be respected. I know we have a reputation for being very passionate. Also take a look how we interact with each other and the players on twitter. We LOVE our Jets football.
History and Tradition. Well if it were not for a guy named Joe Namath, and that famous finger wagging as he jogged over the biggest upset in football, we would not even be having this conversation. Jets fans have a history of turning on their players if your wrong us. I will say we are the most dedicated especially during the “bad years” of losing. Remember all those “Joe Must Go” paper bags over your heads? Before this year, the wait list was ridiculous. I personally was on that list since 1990 and finally got my call back in 2002 to be a regular season ticket holder. Obviously with PSLs looming, if you have the dough, anyone can sign up for Jets tickets now.
The only think that surprised me about this list was seeing the Titans over us. I didn’t think they had THAT much of a huge fan loyality base. I know the Steelers and Patriots have a cult following like us, and seeing first hand at the AFC Championship, I KNOW Colts deserve the number one slot.
Doesn’t it just piss you off though, that the Pats are once again above the Jets?!? They are by far the brand/team that I despise the most out of everything. Call it what you will, but I’m sure they feel the same way about us.
So what do you think? Do you agree with this list?

Madden 11 will be the next installment of the realistic game and EA Sports has a poll up on their site of which teams you would like to see in the demo. I first heard about this on Twitter and then saw a post this morning from “thejetsblog.com“:
Angel Navedo from TJB: The folks at EA Sports are giving fans a chance to vote on which teams are featured in this summer’s Madden 11 demo. Voters have the option to recreate the Saints-Colts Super Bowl, or take control of the teams in the AFC and NFC Championship rounds.
Yesterday the Jets were trailing but when I just took the poll, we had a pretty good lead. Jets fever is beginning!!
This is more proof that Woody’s ultimate plan could be working. First signing up to HBO’s “Hard Knocks” and now the revered NFL Video game Madden!
I hear tons of fans not wanting all this attention, but I ask, WHY NOT? When are we ever in the spotlight like this? I don’t believe in the Madden Curse, besides, that is only for the athlete that appears on the cover. I never heard of one for the team that shows up in the demo which you can see in the aisles of your favorite video game store.
I love all this attention, DO YOU? Let us know what you think?
