DUSTINKELLER81 Did I tell y’all that during the game on Thursday a bird pooped on my leg..people call it good luck but come on now..pooped on =lucky? 04 Sep 2010 from Echofon

this quote was brought to you by quoteurl

  • Santonio Holmes [@Santonio10] continues to impress me with what I see off the field.  I liked what I saw from him on episode 2 of Hard Knocks when he was mentoring Joe McKnight on the side line.  Now, I found a story where he donated cleats and gloves to the Lincoln H.S. football team.

Wande and Holmes had been looking for ways to get the receiver involved in the community. “Santonio wanted to find ways to help out in the community, he’s had a lot of ideas.” Wande added.

Holmes purchased the equipment through his contract with Reebok, and sent them right to Lincoln.

“I heard through the Jets,” Holmes said via email. “They were aware of the lack of equipment and the needs of the athletic department. Based on their needs I decided to donate to Lincoln High School.”

Holmes and Hampton never met when the coach came to the Jets OTA camp, yet the Jets receiver would like the opportunity to meet him and the Lincoln football team.
“I would like to visit the school and talk to the kids about following your dreams and staying focused in order to reach your goals,” Holmes added.

“We’ve been told not to expect Mark to do anything extra – interviews, appearances – outside of what’s basically his normal media responsibilities,” a network source said.

The spy added that this wasn’t the Jets’ idea, but Sanchez’s.

Does this mean Sanchez has decided to fulfill only the necessary media requirements mandated by the league? Is all this because he doesn’t want extracurricular activities to get in the way of his day job, playing quarterback?

Maybe Sanchez is actually tired of being distracted.

Has Darrelle Revis Played His Last Game for the New York Jets?

by Jets News Poster on September 4, 2010

Revis

With the 2010 season just about to start and the fact that Darrelle Revis [@Revis24] has missed the entire training camp, his holdout has gone from a funny story line in Hard Knocks to the possibility that Revis may never wear the Gang Green ever again!  Yes, I’ll say it again.  It is looking like Darrelle Revis MAY NEVER play for the New York Jets EVER again!

View Poll

I wasn’t too worried about the Jets not signing the holdout Revis because these things work themselves out, usually in the last couple of weeks before the regular season.  I truly believe the Jets screwed the pooch by going public and declaring to the world that Darrelle Revis is the best player in the NFL.  That put all the leverage and attention on Darrelle and the only way to get out of that statement was to pay him like the best player in the NFL.

The Waiting Game Photo Credit: Neil Miller

The Jets then put their foot in their mouth by not holding up to that “promise”.  I truly believe that if Rex didn’t say publicly that Revis was the greatest and the Jets didn’t say that they were going to sign him long term Revis would be getting ready for the new season WITH a new contract in place.  If they did all this behind closed doors, both Revis and the Jets would be in a long term “happy” marriage.

If you were Revis and had a pretty good idea that your value isn’t going down anytime soon (there’s plenty of proof of that around the NFL) and you no longer had faith in the Jets, would you ever play for them again? Is that the kind of professional, working marriage you’d want to get into?

Adding to the complexity of this mess, we know the story of his uncle, DT Sean Gilbert, holding out and sat out the entire 1997 season with the Washington Redskins.  He NEVER put on the Redskins uniform again as he signed with the Carolina Panthers the following year.  If Revis were to follow the same strategy, he wouldn’t be able to do that for the 2011 season.  In fact, he has three years left in his contract and with talks of a lock out next year, it’s going to be a LONG time before Revis plays football again, at least in the NFL.

Time was running out, but Charley Casserly never believed in his heart that Sean Gilbert would do the unthinkable.

Gilbert, the talented Redskins defensive tackle, wanted to get paid. Casserly wanted to pay him, but the start of the season was fast approaching with no deal in sight.

They never came to an agreement and Gilbert sat out the entire 1997 season.

Thirteen years later, Darrelle Revis‘ training-camp holdout looks similar to the one his uncle staged. Gilbert, one of the major influences in Revis’ life, eventually was traded to the Panthers in 1998 for two first-round picks and signed a seven-year, $46.5 million deal.

“If you’re good enough and you sit out, you’re still going to make a lot of money the next year,” said Casserly, then Washington’s general manager. “I think that’s where (Revis’) mindset is: What am I risking? One million dollars? I’m still going to be paid.”

Read More – NY Daily News

Even Revis’ grandmother has gotten into the fold by talking with ESPN’s Cimini:

This grandma knows the business of the NFL, and it bothers her that Darrelle isn’t playing football with the season less than two weeks away.

“Darrelle does what he does because he loves it,” she said, sitting at her dining-room table. “For this to be happening to him, it’s almost like a slap in the face, because he’s not appreciated.

So much for the gag order. Revis’ agents and the Jets agreed last month not to discuss the negotiations publicly, but does that include grandparents?

“I know he wants to play, but Darrelle understands contract negotiations,” she said, wearing the local school’s colors — an orange Aliquippa High T-shirt. “Some players don’t get it, but Darrelle can read a contract. I think he’s comfortable with his decision [to hold out] because he knows what he was told by the Jets and he knows what he’s worth

“People are trying to portray him as greedy, but he has outperformed his contract,” she continued. “For them to put him in this position is just unreal.”

It looks like Revis is digging in for the long haul and the Jets and Darrelle seem as far apart from settling this and bringing the CB back to the Jets.

Do you think Darrelle Revis will play another game with the New York Jets?  At this point in the holdout, do you want him back?  How do you feel about Revis now?  Is it the same when he first started his hold out?

New York Jets Tweet of the Day: Jason Davis AND Don Warren

  1. D.Warren

  2. Jason Davis
JasonDavis43 Thanx for the well wishes, it has been ruff to break in but I no I will play for a long time in the rt spot. Until then I’ll improve daily 04 Sep 2010 from Echofon

  • Today at 6pm is the deadline for “Cut Day” and many announcements of players being cut from the Jets were being made on Twitter.  Two players that had active twitter accounts were cut yesterday and we say goodbye at least as Jets Twitter accounts.  Jason Davis [@JasonDavis43] and Don Warren [@DWarren35] were unfortunately let go.  Here is Rich Cimini’s forecast of what he thinks the roster will look like at 6:01pm.

Barring a curve ball, here’s what the roster will look like Saturday. It doesn’t count Revis (they will get a roster exemption) or WR Santonio Holmes (he will go on the suspended list).

QB — Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell, Kellen Clemens. Cuts: None.

RB — LaDainian Tomlinson, Shonn Greene, Tony Richardson, John Conner, Danny Woodhead, Joe McKnight.

WR — Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Brad Smith, David Clowney.

TE — Dustin Keller, Ben Hartsock, Matt Mulligan, Jeff Cumberland.

OL — D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Matt Slauson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Damien Woody, Wayne Hunter, Rob Hunter, Vladimir Ducasse.

DL — Shaun Ellis, Kris Jenkins, Mike DeVito, Sione Pouha, Vernon Gholston, Matt Kroul.

LB — David Harris, Bart Scott, Bryan Thomas, Calvin Pace, Jason Taylor, Jamaal Westerman, Kenwin Cummings, Lance Laury.

DB — Antonio Cromartie, Jim Leonhard, Kyle Wilson, Brodney Pool, Eric Smith, Dwight Lowery, Drew Coleman, James Ihedigbo, Marquice Cole.

SP — Nick Folk, Steve Weatherford, Tanner Purdum.

“Maybe. Does it give you more confidence? Probably,” Woodhead said when told what Ryan said. “But I’m not approaching this, by any means, as if I’ve solidified my roster spot. By all means, I’m just going to go back, probably sleep, try to get eight hours in, and just rest.”

The Jets’ top two running backs are starter Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson. Ryan also said fourth-round pick Joe McKnight will be on the team, despite a disappointing preseason that made the coach lose confidence in McKnight’s ability to be active on gameday. Ryan has also said the Jets will keep two fullbacks — veteran Tony Richardson and rookie John Conner — making for a heavy backfield.

The new twitter account is ready to go and there will be some great deals.  Keep looking to @JetsTwit_Tiqs for the tweets.  In the mean time, why don’t you follow the account.  thx!

Joe Namath Talks Jets’ Leadership on Michael Kay

by Jets News Poster on September 2, 2010

The question of leadership has been the latest hot topic in Jets Nation, first being talked about on Hard Knocks, episode 4 and now Joe Namath on his regular appearance on the Michael Kay show talked about the subject as well.

Joe Namath on the Michael Kay Show 9/2/2010 – Click to Listen

Audio and Picture Credit ESPN

  • Joe spoke about Kellen Clemens calling it ‘HogWash’ the game the finance people play.  If they didn’t think Clemens was worthy of being a two, why did they keep him around.  He loved how Kellen handled himself.
  • Joe believes that Kellen didn’t move on because of timing.  He believes Clemens doesn’t want to move and feels he can step up and have a chance.
  • They spoke about the left guard mess and how Sanchez was hit hard.  Joe is not convinced that the O-line is up to snuff but the first string really doesn’t start until the first game of the season.  He said players do not get focused until the season starts.
  • Joe spoke about Mark’s leadership but doesn’t think he has matured yet but it will come in due time.
  • Joe believes that Mark calling the plays in the last pre-season game is a good exercise and to give him insight on how difficult the job is for a coordinator.

Is There a Lack of Discipline and Leadership on the Jets?

by Jets News Poster on September 2, 2010

Lack of Leadership?

The New York Jets finish their pre-season schedule tonight when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in their final game before the regular season.  Yesterday on the bus ride, many players were tweeting with each other and especially what you would expect football players to talk about: Food.

Later that night in yesterday’s episode of Hard Knocks, there was a scene where the players were warming up for a practice at Hofstra university in front of 10,000 rabid friends chowing down on McDonalds. Later in the show, Rex Ryan and others WERE NOT HAPPY about the lack of discipline and he let the team know about it in a nice little speech.  In a funny moment, he then finished his rant telling the players to get a Good Night Snack.  You should have seen their faces.

  1. Dennis Waszak Jr.
DWAZ73 Wonder how hard it was for guys to not laugh after Rex ended that speech with his “snack” line. Any wonder why #Jets love this guy? 02 Sep 2010 from Twitter for iPhone
  2. Rich Cimini
RichCimini Everybody knows there’s a team snack on eve of games, but it still was funny to hear Rex Ryan’s “snack” line at the end of his rant. #Jets 02 Sep 2010 from web
  3. Rich Cimini
RichCimini Eating hamburgers at practice, sleepwalking on offense, showing no leadership … you get the feeling #Jets aren’t taking things seriously? 02 Sep 2010 from web

Getting serious now, do the Jets really have a lack of discipline and leadership on the team? During the episode last night, there was a segment where the coaches were talking about how there isn’t any one player who can fire up the troops.

A point was made that the coaches can scream all they want, but a player really has to take the team over and lead.  Thomas Jones was the guy last year in the lockerroom.  Alan Faneca was the leader on the line, and Leon Washington was the leader on special teams.  All these guys are gone and I do believe the Jets have the leadership on the team but they may not be as vocal.  Which begs the question, do you need to be load to lead?  I say no normally, but on a football team, yes.

Who are the Leaders on the Team?

Mark Sanchez is in his second year and is well on his way to becoming the face of the franchise (they don’t call him the Sanchize for nothing), but he is still young and learning and he seems unsure of himself.  In other episodes of Hard Knocks, his head was down and he was hard on himself.  The coaches were mentoring him to fight back, be vocal and show confidence.  This clearly is holding him back to becoming the guy to fire up the troops, FOR NOW.

T-Rich, Tony Richardson, is a true leader, but he leads by example, discipline and just the overall way he carries himself off and on the field.  He is a true professional, but in my argument above to be vocal, this is not your guy.  He doesn’t have that screaming mentality.

Nick Mangold, is a true leader on and off the field.  He helps Mark, the coaches and the other players around him better.  You can see he takes his job very seriously but he does have fun.  His attitude is perfect and he was even one of the players who was unhappy about his contract situation but handled it perfectly and was rewarded handsomely for it.

I would put Darrelle Revis in the category of leader but as they say “You have to be in it to win it” and well you know he’s not in camp. IN MY OPINION, if he handled his contract dispute exactly like Mangold, he would be the true leader on defense, have a new contract, and would be ready for the regular season.  Instead, he has been the brunt of so many rumors and jokes.

Kris Jenkins would be my choice for the leader on that Defense.  He is a jokester like Mangold, but his player does all the talking.  The guy showed that he was serious about his weight this offseason and it’s already showing on the field.  I’ve also seen him be very vocal to the players in footage in the locker room.

I’m sure that there are many other players on this current team that are ready to grab the reigns and step up their play, their leadership, and prove it to the coaches.  Who will they be, and when will it happen?  If the preseason is any indication on how the Jets will be during the season, I would then say that sooner would be better than later!

Agree?  Let me know!

  • It was very interesting to see the Tim Colishaw drama unfold behind the scenes in the Jets offices.  ProFootballTalk thinks that Mike Tannenbaum is either clueless or should win an Emmy for that performance.

Tannenbaum sounded completely baffled when the Hard Knocks cameras caught him asking, “Where do you think this is coming from?”

Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine was shown reading PFT as he asked head coach Rex Ryan, “Why does Tim Cowlishaw keep reporting about Revis?”

  • The Jets Blog is awaiting to hear from Mark Sanchez as we are about his extracurricular activities and we aren’t talking bars and all nighters.

So when he didn’t have to prep as a starter for tonight’s game, his obvious choice for leisure-time activities was a Justin Bieber concert?  And I thought I was concerned about his decision making at times ON the field … geez.

And let’s not forget about his choice for wallpaper.

Sanchez Goes to Teeny Bopper Concert: Why Mark Why?

by Jets News Poster on September 1, 2010

Sanchez

In the “Is this Really News” category, our star quarterback Mark Sanchez [@Mark_Sanchez] did the COMPLETE opposite from what Joe Namath would have done in his hay day:  He went to a teeny bopper concert to see Justin Beiber.  Could you imagine Broadway Joe at a Monkees concert!

There was recent news that Mark Sanchez is kind of a nerd, but this isn’t nerdy.  This is kind of disturbing. This can’t be good for a Quarterbacks’ reputation.   It’s one think for Tom Brady to have the Bieber haircut but it’s another to go to his concert as a huge fan.  How much you want to bet he was the only one with a five o’clock shadow who was NOT chaperoning his daughter.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez was in the crowd to see teen heartthrob Justin Bieber’s show at Madison Square Garden last night, according to WFAN. Morning host Craig Carton “reported” that Sanchez was in the crowd at the packed arena to see the 14-year-old sing. Earlier this year the Jets quarterback danced and sang along to “I’m Every Woman,” with Tina Fey and Bieber on Saturday Night Live.

  • Tony Richardson is mentoring himself out of a job and he is ok with that.  He has the pay if forward attidutde and the Terminator John Conner will benefit from it!

The NFL is turning into a passing league, and guys like Richardson — throwback fullbacks — are becoming harder to find.

The New York Jets have two, and Richardson is doing everything he can to impart his wisdom to Conner. It’s an extraordinary dynamic, to be sure. Richardson, 38, knows one day he will lose his job to Conner, yet he has no problem sharing his trade secrets with the kid. It’s a pay-it-forward ritual that started for Richardson in ‘94, when the Cowboys’ Daryl Johnston did the same for him

My apologies for my little unannounced four or five day vacation. The new academic year began a week ago, and I’ve had some trouble adjusting to the rigors of balancing this site with all my other projects, clubs and homework. I decided it best last Thursday to just take a breather and try to work out some kind of routine that would help me manage JK alongside my other responsibilities, without giving favor to one and allowing the other to languish

Jets’ Holmes and Sanchez to Skype for Four Weeks

by Jets News Poster on August 31, 2010

Skype

Technology is definitely changing the way we live our lives to let’s say 15 years ago.  The public internet as we know it today was just starting to take off, there was no such thing as social media, and if you had a cell phone you were in the minority.

In a day and age where instant gratification and on demand rules, there is so much information coming at us.  In the NFL and other sports Twitter has opened a window into the players lives where we the average fans get to interact with players as well as being able to see them interact with each other.

Let's Hope This is Not How They Talk

Well now, in a first in the NFL, a suspended player will be able to communicate with his starting QB on a daily basis using the technology Skype.

Skype (pronounced /ˈskaɪp/) is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system

Rich Cimini from ESPN reports:

Following up on an earlier item, a league spokesman said there’s no rule that prohibits a suspended player from communicating with a teammate during his suspension.

In his news conference, Rex Ryan mentioned that WR Santonio Holmes has “already talked about skyping with Mark (Sanchez) every day about going over the offensive plays.” Starting Friday, Holmes will serve a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. The violation occurred when he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ryan didn’t seem to know if skyping is legal.

“Well, I hope so,” he said. “Let’s hold off on that for now. Let’s make a phone call real quick.”

Actually, skyping is unnecessary. On a suspension of less than one year, the player is allowed to be at the team facility and participate in team activities other than practice, at the club’s discretion, according to a league spokesman. The rule was changed several years ago.

It’s widely assumed that suspended players can’t be around their team. Not so. You learn something every day.

Indeed.  I love Technology.
