I have seen a lot of commentary floating around in regards to Welker having a great/good game against Darrelle Revis. While it is true that Welker had five catches 124 yards, he only had one catch for 4 yards while Revis was covering him.
According to Peter King, the Jets had Revis covering Welker on 45 plays. 26 of those were passes in 19 were runs. Revis appeared to have man coverage either 21 or 22 times.
The play that is in question is the 74 yard completion to Welker in which Revis chased him down on the 6 yard line. On the play both Smith and Leonhard bit hard on a run fake and tried their best to get back into position. It was Smith that was on Revis’ side of the field. Because of this, Welker didn’t have much of an issue beating Smith on the play. Revis was on the outside, and didn’t seem to bite on the run fake. He throttled down as if he had either the outside quarter or possibly even the flat. After seeing Smith jump up to the line of scrimmage, Revis gave chase. It seemed pretty clear to me that Revis did not believe that the route was his responsibility. If it was, it was a blown coverage on his part. Most likely, it was Smith’s coverage.
On other plays, Revis was right is Welker hip pocket. At times he was successful rerouting Welker at the line of scrimmage. Other times, he was running the route better than Welker. On the one completion to Welker while on Revis Island, it took an amazing throw and catch for the completion for 4 yards.
This was an interesting matchup for Revis as it is a different type of receiver than he normally faces. He typically gets the larger Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson types. Welker brought much more quickness to the table but it didn’t seem to matter much against Revis. Unfortunately, Welker and the Patriots got the last laugh on this day beating the Jets 30-21.
Nike has a new series of commercials featuring the likes of Ray Rice, DeSean Jackson, Ndamukong Suh, Larry Fitzgerald, and most importantly Darrelle Revis. It is good to see non-QB’s getting in on some endorsments. Football players get left out in the cold all too often. It is also a pretty cool series of commercials. Check the Revis commercials below and the rest on YouTube.

LOCKING IT DOWN Shutdown corner
The rarest commodity in football.
This is where slant passes go to die.
Where smack-talking wide receivers grow alligator arms.
And shudder at their own shadow.
But off the field, the cape comes off.
You’re just a regular guy.
A worker.
No special treatment, thanks.
You know what they say about making it in New York.
But you’ve already made it out of hardscrabble Aliquippa, Pennsylvania
You’ve beaten the odds.
Now imagine what you’ll do to a quarterback.
Always on.

Well folks, this is game one of the preseason for our beloved New York Jets. I am not expecting too much out of the first string offense at this point. The line and Plaxico are all banged up, Sanchez hasn’t had a ton of time with these receivers, and there is a change in the running game with Greene being the primary back. This is going to take some time to click. The defense on the other hand, doesn’t have any excuses and should be fully capable of turning in a solid effort.
You can never get too high or too low based on preseason games. This week is more about getting looks from players battling for a roster spot. However, here are a couple points to look for in this preseason week one matchup.
How does the bruised and battered NY offensive line hold up? Gone are the days or Woody and Faneca. Moore and Mangold are dinged up and out for this week? How does Brick with this rebuilt line hold up?
Is Shonn Greene ready to carry the load? He has looked great at times. On the flip side, he has also put the ball on the ground. Does Greene finally begin to take a step forward?
Texans offense versus Jets defense (1rst units). Both units are extremely capable and are returning their core players.
This should be a good challenge for the Jets D out of the gate.
Other players of interest:
Muhammad Wilkerson – How does the rook adjust to the speed of the NFL
Jamal Westerman- Tabbed designated pass rusher by Rex Ryan, does Westerman get any pressures tonight?
Jeremy Kerley – The word on the street is that this kid can play.
Kyle Wilson- A year to put on some strength and sharpen up his technique should helps last year’s top draft pick.
After the Jets were left at the altar by Nnamdi Asomugha, they have rebounded nicely by signing both Plexico Burress, Antonio Cromartie, and several smaller names that will see a lot of playing time this year for the Jets. While the roster is starting the round out, the Jets have hinted at more moves to come. Recent rumors have Jerricho Cotchery on the trade market. Are the Jets going to try and make a splash in the trade market or are they just trying to clear cap space for another free agent signing? Currently, the roster is probably about even with where it was last year. They have lost a few players to free agency and retirement. With any luck this will be outweighed by another year of maturity for Sanchez, another year in the system for the rest of the players, and a couple of rooks stepping up.
Added/Resigned
Plexico Burress –
Santonio Holmes – Resigned for 5 years 50 million
Anotonio Cromartie- Resigned for 4 year 32 million
Eric Smith – Resigned
Wayne Hunter – Most likely will replace the retired Damien Woody at right tackle
Rob Turner – Resigned
Nick Folk
Donald Strickland – Free Agent
Retired-
Damien Woody
Kris Jenkins
Let Go/Lost -
Brad Smith – Bills
Kellen Clemens – Redskins
Drew Coleman – Jaguars
Steve Weatherford – Giants
Vernon Gholston – Bears
Ben Hartsock – Carolina
Jason Taylor – Miami
Note, this listed is compiled by a list of rumors floating around on various blogs and twitter.
Santonio Holmes – The Jets were reportedly the first to reach out to Holmes and have made an offer. The Redskins, one expected teams to make a play form Holmes (and Edwards), have reportedly resigned Santana Moss. This is good for the Jets as there is less money to go around at the receiver position for the Skins.
Anotonio Comartie- The Jets have reportedly reached out to his camp. Philip Buchanon seems to be considering the Jets as well. On Twitter, he asked, “Wuz up, Family…Redskins or Jets?”
Philip Buchanon – See above.
Nnamdi Asomugha – The Jets have reportedly made an offer to the most coveted free agent on the market.
Eric Smith – The Jets have reportedly expressed an interest in resigning Smith.
Wayne Hunter – The Jets have reached Agreement with Wayne Hunter.
Damien Woody – The Jets have apparently reached out to Woody. Unfortunately, the breaking news is that he is retiring.
Kris Jenkins – Retired

After the Pittsburgh game, Rex Ryan told his team to mark their spot in the locker room because they would be back to Pittsburgh in the playoffs. It turns out that Rex is a prophet as the Jets upset an overwhelming favorite today in the New England Patriots. Nobody (except Herm Edwards on ESPN), picked the Jets to win this one. Most fans, myself included, thought that while we may have a chance, it is not likely. And that is why they play the game. The Jets put it all together today. Instead of throwing fastball blitzes, the Jets’ D continually threw changeups. When they did decide to bring the heat, they typically had good pressure against Brady. The Pats offense didn’t look like the Pats offense. They were continually out of sync and only showed glimpses of the high powered offense that ruled the regular season.
Next up for the Jets; the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh. Strap on your chinstraps, there is going to be a lot of hitting next Sunday.
Tom Brady isn’t afraid to challenge him but Revis had another great game. However, it was a little different than most as he wasn’t locked up on one receiver all game. Wes Welker had a little out that turned into a ten yard reception for a first down but that was about it. While Revis was matched up on Deon Branch, he nearly came up with two int’s. There were a couple (1 maybe 2) other receptions in Revis’ vicinity, but it looked like zone coverage. The rest of the DB’s played exceptionally well as Brady continually had time but couldn’t find any place to go with the ball.
Reggie Wayne was held to one catch for one yard in last night’s wild card matchup versus the Jets. This improves on last year’s machup in which Revis blanketed Wayne who had 3 catches for 55 yards and a fumble. To be fair, Manning didn’t even look in Wayne’s direction last night, however, I sort of doubt that he would have had much success if he did. Either way, it pretty amazing that a receiver who led the AFC with 111 catches in the regular season, was a nonfactor last night due to Mister Darrelle Revis.
